The Department of English was delighted to improve the accessibility of the English and Philosophy Building (EPB), with the addition of an accessible drinking fountain. The fountain, which is accessible to students and staff, was installed on the 4th floor of the building in September.
The funds for the project, which were given by an anonymous donor, were used to carry out renovation works by the university’s Facilities Management team. Due to the existing structure of the building, the work was complex. A series of water pipes, running from the ceiling to the floor, had to be removed in order to make the space wheelchair accessible at a cost of $35,000.
The new fountain will ensure accessible drinking facilities for students and staff who make up part of the Department of English, and all who attend classes and work in EPB.
Head of the Department of English, Professor Loren Glass said, “I am particularly grateful to Kate Torno, who advocated aggressively for this improvement to our facilities. We are committed to accessibility, and are deeply grateful to the anonymous donor.”
