Student Organizations
English Society
The English Society puts on year-round programming that seeks to build community among English majors, minors, and any other literary-minded members of the greater Iowa City community. In addition to holding weekly meetings and study breaks during finals, the student-run organization hosts open mics twice a month where anyone is able to share to their work (anything from essays to songs to poems) or simply come and listen.
The Society also hosts the English Department’s Inspiration Series. Casual and low-key events, the sessions hosted through the Inspiration Series allow students the chance to learn and to ask about their professors’ lives, research interests, hobbies, and more.
Meetings are held every Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Gerber Lounge (304 EPB) unless otherwise stated. For more information, you can also email studorg-english-society@uiowa.edu and check out their UI Student Organizations page.
Sigma Tau Delta – (Alpha Tau Iota Chapter)
Chartered in September 2012, the Alpha Tau Iota Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta at the University of Iowa welcomes and asks you to consider joining fellow students who find joy in working with language and literature. Membership opens a wealth of opportunity to English students looking to supplement their education.
In addition to chapter opportunities, members of Sigma Tau Delta are invited to apply for scholarships, grants, and internships only available through the national organization. Students can submit work for the annual convention, which members have done in the past with great success. Membership also offers opportunities for publication and writing awards that are difficult to find elsewhere.
To be eligible to join Sigma Tau Delta, students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.33 or higher, as well as a 3.33 average or higher in the English major. Students must also have completed at least three semesters of college coursework, with a minimum of two college courses that fulfill requirements of the English major.
