Current UI undergraduates majoring in English or English and Creative Writing in their third year of study are eligible to apply to the undergraduate-to-graduate program and earn an MA in English-Literary Studies with their BA.

Admission Requirements

The U2G program requires that University of Iowa English Department students be in good standing and receive the undergraduate degree before entering their fifth year of the MA program. The student will apply to the Master’s program before the end of the second semester of the junior (equivalent) undergraduate year

  1. Completion of 80 hours of undergraduate work prior to application. A student who did not start their academic career at the University of Iowa must have completed 30 semester hours at Iowa prior to application.
  2. Completion of ENGL: 2010, one upper-level ENGL course (either 3000- or 4000-level), and 21 hours of the 36 hours required to fulfill the requirements for the major.
  3. Minimum 3.7 University of Iowa English GPA upon application. Minimum 3.5 University of Iowa CUM GPA upon application. Minimum 3.4 cumulative GPA upon completion of undergraduate degree.

As the student is a current University of Iowa student, they are considered TOEFL exempt for the U2G program.

How to Apply

UI undergraduates who wish to join the U2G program apply directly to the Graduate College here before the May 15, 2024 deadline.

The application is in two parts: first, the $60.00 application fee is paid by using a credit card ($100.00 for international applicants). After submitting the first application, you will receive email instructions on how to establish access your Admissions Profile on MyUI. You will then upload the required supplemental pdf documents through a secure portal. Please note that it can take up to 24 hours after submitting the fee to receive the email prompting the completion of your application.

Required Materials

  1. A personal statement that describes the applicant’s research interests and professional goals.
  2. A 10–15-page (2500-3000 words) writing sample. Please submit a work of literary criticism.
  3. Two letters of recommendation from University of Iowa faculty.

Applicants should apply to the MA with the Literary Studies subprogram. In section C of the application, indicate "yes" when asked "Are you applying for an undergraduate/graduate combined program (U2G)?."
