Get to know Julia

I am a writer and Italian translator, with a particular interest in hybrid forms, life-writing, music writing, humor, and the literary use of archival research. My work has been published in The Massachusetts Review, The Offing, Revista Nexos, Asymptote, and the anthology Choice Words: Writers on Abortion (Haymarket Books 2020), among others, and I'm a contributor to VAN Magazine and The Millions. My first book, a hidden history of women in classical music, is forthcoming from Scribner Books.

I bring my parallel profession in publishing to teach courses that explore how publishing shapes literature. I worked in book publishing for over seven years at a range of presses and agencies, including Wesleyan University Press, New York Review Books, Archipelago Books, and Sarah Lazin Books, where I was a literary agent. Most recently, I was an in-house translator for Italy's largest trade publisher, Mondadori Libri, and Agenzia Elastica, a leading Italian speaking and literary agency. 

My writing has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Program, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, Vermont Studio Center, and an Iowa Arts Fellowship. I hold two MFAs from University of Iowa, in Nonfiction and in Literary Translation.
