Mark Isham teaches business writing, technical writing, and team writing in the English Department and the College of Engineering, and has taught those subjects in the College of Business MBA Program at the University of Iowa. He has taught writing and literature at Coe College, and Kirkwood Community College. Mark has written a report on Sustainability and Chemistry for the National Science Foundation and helped found and consults with the Hanson Center for Technical Communication in the College of Engineering. He also gives seminars throughout Iowa and the Midwest in business writing. Recent clients include Rockwell Collins, Fisher Controls International, Delta Dental Plans Association, National Computer Systems, Stanley Consultants, Howard R. Green and Company, and The Iowa Engineering Society. Recently he has taught students to cartoon in his classes as a way to encourage reflection and improve writing. He has also been teaching a specific course in cartooning for freshmen and teaching faculty, through the Center for Teaching, to use cartooning in their courses. Mark appeared on the Talk of Iowa program on Iowa Public Radio and appeared several times on KRUI 89.7 fm to talk about how to help students tap into deep learning by creating cartoons and comic strips. He keeps a daily comic of his life.
