Miriam Janechek is a doctoral candidate in English and will defend her dissertation in the Fall 2016. Under the direction of Lori Branch, this dissertation examines the complicated relationship between secularization and the 19th century religious children’s magazine marketplace. Her work examines magazines such as Good Words for the Young and the many publications of the Religious Tract Society, as well as authors such as George MacDonald, Hesba Stretton, and Dr. Thomas Barnardo.
At the University of Iowa, Miriam taught writing in the Frank Business Writing Center and the general education writing center, and she has worked as a consultant with the College of Engineering’s Hanson Center for Technical Communication. She has taught the core required survey literature course in the General Education Department, introducing students to college level writing, literary interpretation, and dynamic classroom discussion.
