| Scholarships and Prizes for English Majors | ||
The English Department is not involved in the process of awarding financial assistance to incoming students. Each year, however, the English Department solicits applications for the following scholarships. Applicants must be English majors and have a minimum GPA of 3.2. Application forms are available from the departmental receptionist in 308 EPB and usually must be submitted in March of each year (check for specific deadline date each year). For more information about applying for scholarships, see your advisor. 1. The Helen K Fairall Scholarship Amount of award: resident tuition for one year. Eligibility: junior, senior, or graduate men or women, with preference given to those interested in literature since 1850; applicants must either have been born in Iowa and have been educated in Iowa schools in grades 1-8 and/or have been graduated from an Iowa high school. Financial need is not a consideration. 2. The Ruth Gulden Holsteen and Charles Sophus Holsteen Memorial Scholarship. Amount of award--resident tuition for one year. Eligibility: must be a U. S. citizen and have spent at least one full academic year at the University of Iowa prior to consideration for this award. Criteria include "good citizenship." Financial need is not a consideration. 3. The Margaret Leuz Einspahr Scholarship. Amount of award--tuition grant of approximately $1000 (amount changes yearly). Eligibility: must be an undergraduate with preference given to those interested in the teaching profession, preference given to those in financial need, and preference given to Iowans. |
4. The Louise P. Herring Scholarship. Amount of award--resident tuition for one year. Eligibility: junior or senior standing in the year of award; high purpose and promise; plans for a teaching career; commitment to English studies as a preparation for life. Financial need is not a consideration. 5. The E.P. Kuhl Shakespeare Essay Prize A $100 award given each year for the best essay on a topic from Shakespeare. Manuscripts should be submitted to the department receptionist. 6. The John C. McGalliard Medieval Essay Prize . An award given each year for the best essay on a topic from medieval literature. Manuscripts should be submitted to the department receptionist. Recipients will be chosen by a committee of faculty in the Department of English, which will make its decisions on the basis of the applicants' eligibility for the various awards, their academic records (a 3.2 GPA is the minimum required for application), and their statements of purpose. Applicants must fill out the application form and supply the required one page statement. One application will serve for consideration of all relevant awards. While the department has every expectation that these awards will be authorized, it cannot guarantee that they will be, nor can it guarantee the amount of the awards. |
