In May of 2005 Robin Hemley and Rowena Torrevillas led a group of ten graduate students from the Nonfiction Writing Program to the Philippines for the first Overseas Writing Program. As part of their experience, the group was feted by University of the Philippines, hiked up an active volcano, explored Manila, swam in the waters off the island of Boracay, visited the "enchanted" island of Siquijor, and participated in the first Creative Nonfcition Symposium at the National Writers Workshop at Siliman University in Dumaguete. There, they delivered papers on various issues in contemporary nonfiction and participated in workshops with their Filipino counterparts.
The Overseas Writing
Workshop is available for credit and non-credit to students in the NWP, MFA
students at the University of Iowa, MFA students at other degree-granting
institutions, as well as to post-bac students. for more information or inquiries,
