Criteria for Selection
Approved by the UI English Department Executive
Committee, 11/28/00
- Every fall when an exchange is possible, the chair
of the Exchanges Committee will send out a call to all faculty in English
inviting them to apply for the
Montpellier exchange in the following academic year.
- The exchange
professor will be selected by the Chair of the Exchanges Committee
and the Department
Chair with the advice of the Executive Committee following the
guidelines laid out below.
- All faculty applying for the exchange are
encouraged
to read
the summary of procedures explaining customary exchange procedures
and should note, in particular, that they will be expected to teach
in Montpellier
for
the spring semester (mid-February to early June); to teach either
two courses or three (with one a repeat), with the language of instruction
English; that,
in place of their existing salary, they will be paid by the French
government
a salary that will be determined by the French ministry (and
is unlikely to be equal to their US salary); that they will be expected
to make
their own
arrangements for transport and accommodation, with some guidance
from the English Department at Montpellier. Further details about
the
position
are available
from the Chair of the Exchanges Committee.
- If more than one
faculty member applies for the exchange in a year, selection will
be made based
on the following
criteria:
- Curriculum needs at Iowa will have paramount
importance. For this reason, any faculty on an Iowa Fellowship
or with other
recurrent leaves
will not normally be given high priority for the exchange.
- Priority will be given to those faculty who
have least recently participated
in a faculty
exchange program.
- If the stay in Montpellier would
particularly aid a colleague’s research project, this should
be a factor in favor of their selection.
- Where possible, the selection should favor
colleagues
whose application
in previous years was not accepted.
