18th Century Britain/Classical My principal scholarly interests, in the order in which I discovered them, are eighteenth-century English satire and satirists, especially translators and imitators of Roman satire into English verse; influence of Classical Greek and Latin literature on English writers, especially in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; the Bible and English literature; and finally, the Bible as literature. I most enjoy teaching Milton to undergraduates and Pope to graduates, but my favorite author is Samuel Johnson. Also I am the editor of Philological Quarterly. Office: 311 EPB |
