Miriam Gilbert

Shakespeare, Drama, Performance Criticism

My work--teaching courses in drama, editing a major drama anthology, creating CD-ROMs for use in classes, and writing about Shakespeare in performance--all grows out of a long-term immersion in both literature and theatre. I teach courses for both undergraduates and graduates in dramatic literature, stressing the notion of plays as performance-texts. The CD-ROMs highlight the variety of interpretive possibilities in Shakespeare's plays by juxtaposing 2-6 versions of selected moments, chosen from commercially available videotapes. My most recent book also stresses a range of interpretation, by focusing on a single (and highly controversial) play The Merchant of Venice, in a series of post-WWII productions at Stratford-upon-Avon.
