Carol de Saint Victor

Victorian Literature & Nonfiction Writing (Emeritus)

Carol de St. Victor began her academic career as a Victorianist with a special interest in prose fiction and nonfiction. She has written on Dickens, George Eliot, and Mill, and she was a major contributor to British Literary Magazines, a collection of essays on literary periodicals published between 1698 and 1984. More recently she has devoted most of her time to teaching in the MFA in Nonfiction Program, to writing personal travel essays, and to teaching an undergraduate Shakespeare class. She is currently working on a long essay that focuses on the lives of her mother and the mother of her late husband, whose lives spanned roughly the same 90 or so years but whose experience, so very distinct in terms of class, nationality, education, and religious upbringing, established complex and tenuous expectations for the French son and the America daughter he married.
