"All acts of kindness," the poet spoke, and her
words stunned me into silence.
"All acts of kindness
are lights
in the war for justice."
Then, I remembered:
The poor, the persecuted,
the displaced and the dispossessed
need our kindness
to insure that the hungry will eat,
those who are persecuted will be freed,
the dispossessed will, again, find home.
Kindness is not empty benevolence.
It could be a warrior's battle song,
one that transforms silence
into action.Joy Harjo, "Reconciliation," from The Woman Who Fell From The Sky
