Q: Who is my advisor?
A: The undergraduate secretary (Sharry) has a listing of all English majors and their advisors. If they are a new major, Sharry can assign them an advisor. If they need to specifically see their advisor they can go to their office hours (exception during pre-registration). If they just have a general advising question, they can make an appointment with the undergraduate advising office (308 C), or go in during walk-in hours.

Q: What are the requirements for an English major/minor?
A: Requirements for both the English major and the English minor can be found on our Web site at www.uiowa.edu/~english. We also have hard copies or English minor requirements in the clear wall fixture in the main office. Specific questions about the English major or minor should be directed to the undergraduate advisor.

Q: How do I become an English major?
A: Direct the student to the College of Liberal Arts Credit Programs in room 120 Shaffer Hall. They will be given some information that they need to bring back to the English Department, send them into see Sharry.

Q: What is the procedure for adding/dropping a course?
A: Add/drop slips are available in 308 EPB (they are green). The student needs to fill them out before getting their advisor’s signature. Sometimes they will need to get the instructor’s signature to drop, but usually the undergraduate advisor can sign for the instructor as well. If no advisor is available, Sharry can sign for the advisor. They will always need the instructor’s signature to add a course. If the course is for General Education Literature (8G), it needs to be taken to Linda in 308B. Completed forms need to be taken to 30 Calvin Hall by the student.

Q: What are my instructor’s office hours? Where is my instructor’s office?
A: Instructor’s room numbers, office hours and phone numbers are listed on the window outside the main office (as well as in the directory at the front desk).

Q: Where is my instructor’s mailbox?
A: TA and Non-Fiction Writing instructor’s mailboxes are located on the east wall in the main office (308 EPB). Faculty (as well as visiting faculty and Saturday and Evening) mailboxes are located in the Zimansky Room (310 EPB).

Q: Where can I find a current schedule of courses for the English Department?
A: The current schedule of courses is always available on the clear wall fixture in the main office (assuming no one has taken it). There is also a copy of the schedule and the next semester’s proof posted on the bulletin board by Sharry’s office.

Q: Where is the Writer’s Workshop located?
A: The Writer’s Workshop is located in the Dey House at 507 Clinton Street.

Q: Where can I find another department in EPB?
A: We have a listing of other offices located in the building in our directory.

Q: How do I get special permission for a Readings Course?
A: Direct the student to Sharry. She will sign them up for the course.

Q: How do I get my name on a waiting list for a course?
A: Waiting lists come out the day after the last day of registration. The are in the red binders on the table in the main office. Tell the student they will need to go to the class the first day with and add slip and see if the instructor will let them in.
